At the end of what has been a fantastic season it would be a major blow for Suarez and for Uruguay, but there is still hope he will feature at the showpiece in Brazil next month.

According to a report in Uruguayan paper Ovacion (if your Spanish is decent, you can read it here), Suarez injured the meniscus of his knee while training with the national side yesterday and after undergoing an MRI scan last night, sources told the paper that the chances of him undergoing surgery today were ‘very high’.

The report also added that Uruguayan officials were optimistic that the Liverpool striker could recover in time for the World Cup, but with the first clash against Costa Rica scheduled for June 14 and games against England and Italy to follow within ten days of that game, Suarez will have just over three weeks to get himself right for the tournament.

Because the extent of the injury is not yet known it is too early to say whether it will affect Suarez’s participation in the tournament and, even if he does play, whether he will be 100 per cent fit, but Uruguayan fans will be praying that the injury is minor as although theirs is an undoubtedly talented squad, the Reds striker is arguably their most important player, particularly after the season he has just had.

Fans of England, Italy and Costa Rica won’t be too disappointed if he ends up missing out, of course, but neutrals want to see the best players playing in the biggest tournament of all so hopefully Suarez can shake off the injury before the tournament gets underway three weeks from today.
