Man City want Ronaldo, Chelsea still want Rooney and Cesc-y back at Arsenal

Hey, I had to crow bar a Justin Timberlake reference in today okay?

Hey, I had to crow bar a Justin Timberlake reference in today okay?

There are certainly no shortage of big names floating around in the football rumour mill today. We have to say we have our doubts about some of these moves ever getting any further than the back page though but you never know.

The most dramatic, and probably the most unlikely, is the lead in the Star which says that Manchester City are set to swoop in and nab Cristiano Ronaldo, scuppering months of hard work by rivals Manchester United to get the Portuguese superstar back.

We’re pretty sure the man himself said he was staying at Real Madrid last week but when has that ever stopped a juicy rumour.

City are all over today’s papers in fact with Alvaro Negredo again linked with them, in the Express this time. Manuel Pellegrini held a press conference yesterday where he admitted he needed a striker, so that’s probably the root of that story.

We imagine that is also behind the Mirror’s story that Pellegrini is also after Stefan Jovetic. Busy times at the City offices then…

Over at Old Trafford, it seems that Jose Mourinho still fancies a bit of Wayne Rooney (according to the Indo at least) and if he does land Wazza then it is bye-bye to Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.

It’s an exciting day for Arsenal fans, at least if you believe the Daily Mail. They report that former captain Cesc Fabregas could be on his way back to the Londoners as he is said to be ‘uncertain’ about his future. A bit like Ronaldo, we thought he said he was staying at Barca recently but hey, what do we know.

But even if Cesc does come back, we wonder will he get a game at the Emirates. The Star claim that Arsenal are still in genuine pursuit of Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney AND Gonzalo Huguain. That would be one hell of a forward line, but we reckon the only place we’ll see it is on Fifa ’14.

In less glamourous news, Clint Dempsey has had a for sale sign slapped on him by AVB (Times), Victor Wanyama will make his switch from Celtic to Southampton real soon (Telegraph) and Liverpool’s Suso is joining Almeria on loan (Mirror).

West Brom have gone a bit retro and decided they would like to have former Chelsea pair Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda (Mail) although West Ham are also after Kalou.

Finally, the Christian Benteke chase is on and the Sun report that Spurs are offering Villa a choice of Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Scott Parker, Jake Livermore or Tom Huddlestone as part of the Benteke deal. Might take a bit more than that I think…
