Sad news today as reports confirm an employee at Lisheen Mine, Moyne, Co Tipperary, was killed yesterday afternoon.
The website Thurles.info has confirmed that a miner lost his life yesterday afternoon at approximately 4.45pm.
An investigation is currently under way, but it is believed that the worker was driving a loader when it became trapped under rockfall at the Lisheen Mine. The mine has since ceased operations to allow for the investigation to take place.
The alarm was raised and paramedics were called in, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. According to reports, no one else was injured in the incident as it appears to have been localised to one specific area.
It’s not the first time that a tragedy like this has occurred at Lisheen. Back in February 2011, a father of three died following an explosion in the mine, which is owned by Vedanta Resources, the largest mining and metals company in India.
It’s terribly sad news and our thoughts go out to the man’s family at this time.
