The death of Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s mother produced an obit that is full of nods to the show.

Even a passing fan of Matt Groening’s most famous creation will probably know that he took lots of ideas from his childhood and turned them into the most celebrated cartoon in the world.

And the extent of that ‘inspiration’ was very nicely illustrated in the obituary of his mother, Margaret Groening. Margaret died last month, aged 94, and her obituary appeared in an American newspaper this week. It is a treasure trove of small Simpsons references.

We learn that Margaret’s maiden name was Wiggum and that she married a man called Homer in 1941. We also learn that as well as Matt, Margaret also had children called Patty, Lisa and Maggie. All very familiar, eh?

But was the woman herself called Marge? She claimed she never was but we think it is safe to assume that she’s the inspiration behind the blue-haired figurehead of the show too…
