The Higher Education GAA (An Comhairle Ardoideachais CLG) have announced a shortlist of 60 players for the Ulster Bank Sigerson Team of the Century.
The nominees have been announced to coincide with the third level colleges competition’s centenary celebrations and some of the nominated players date back to the origin of the competition in 1911.
The final team will be decided by a selection committee under the chairmanship of Dr Mick Loftus. Comhairle Ardoideachais will be running a competition inviting all entrants to submit their own final panels, the person with the closest team to that of the selection committee’s will win two All Ireland Football final tickets and two tickets to the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup weekend including accommodation. Full details of the competition will soon be available on the Higher Education website.
Inaugural winners UCD have the greatest representation on the shortlist with 22 nominees, while UCC and UCG are next in line with 13 apiece.
Current players such as Dublin’s Bryan Sheehan and Galway’s Michael Meehan have been included on a list that also features the likes of Billy Morgan, Kieran McGeeney, Seamus Moynihan, Paul McGrane and Peter Canavan.
Two of the players on the list, Moynihan (UCC/ITT) and Mayo’s Anthony Finnerty (UCG/UCD) have represented two colleges.
