Pic: Barnsley’s kit clashed with Crystal Palace’s today, so they wore the Palace away kit instead

In these days when virtually every team has at least three shirts it’s not often that an old-fashioned jersey clash takes place. It did today, though.

And it’s not as if it happened in the Conference or well down the leagues either.

No no, Barnsley were forced to wear the Crystal Palace yellow and blue away kit in their clash with the Eagles at Selhurst Park today after the referee judged that both their home kit (red) and away kit (blue and black) were too similar to the red and blue number Palace wear for home games.

Could Crystal Palace not just have worn their own away kit, let Barnsley wear their home one and saved all this confusion? Obviously not.

Barnsley didn’t just stop at wearing the Palace away kit, however.

Judging by the picture taken by the BBC’s Conor McNamara below, Barnsley also had their own players names printed on the back of the jersey as you can spot Barnsley’s David Perkins (number 11) and Kelvin Etuhu (number 23) in yellow jerseys on their way out on to the pitch.

Fans who show up at the game and don’t know the story are bound to be mightily confused, but at least there’ll be no tiresome badge-kissing celebrations from the away side.

Well… there shouldn’t be at least.
