Pic: Even Pat Spillane has jumped aboard the Mayo for Sam bandwagon

The Mayo for Sam bandwagon has spiralled out of control at this stage, so much so, in fact, that one of the country’s most prominent GAA pundits has publicly hopped aboard.

There are still four horses left in the race for Sam Maguire but in terms of public displays of support for their team, one set of supporters have won hands down.

Such have been the amount of public Mayo for Sam messages that we’re reluctant to cover it at this stage, but when we saw Pat Spillane, arguably the most prominent and controversial GAA pundit in the country and one of the greatest footballers of all time, jumping on board the Mayo for Sam bandwagon, we simply had to bring it to your attention.

The man in the photo is Peter Squires, a member of the Abu Dhabi Na Fianna team who came over to Kerry to play in a fundraiser for a local hospital and who all enjoyed some royal hospitality in the Ring Lyne Bar on Valentia Island.

Peter informed us that Pat kindly agreed to ref the game as he has been out to Abu Dhabi as a guest of honour in the past and that he was a gentleman and joined in on the craic with all the Abu Dhabi lads all night.

Sceptics will suggest that Pat knew precious little about the content of said slip of paper, but if it wasn’t bad enough that a Kerryman would endorse the credentials of another county, surely it’s made even worse by the fact that his own county are still very much in the race.

Pat, you’ve got a lot of explaining to do.

Hat-tip to Barry Bear for sending this one into us
