Pic: Somebody forgot to proof-read the Chelsea match report in The Independent today

At least we assume that was what happened, for we sincerely doubt that the author of the match report wanted the last line included.

At least we assume that was what happened, for we sincerely doubt that the author of the match report wanted the last line included.

Today was a pretty big day for The Independent across the water, as today’s paper was the first with a brand new re-design that appears to have earned the paper an awful lot of kudos in social media circles.

With that in mind, it wasn’t the ideal time for a bit of a sub-editing howler to appear in today’s edition, as the match report on Chelsea’s victory over Schalke last night finished with a line that we imagine was either a remarkably honest account of the game or the match report itself.

It would appear as if the author of the match report included this line in their copy assuming that the sub-editor would see it and immediately take it out, but with the re-design it would have been a pretty busy evening in the Independent offices and it could have been because of tiredness as much anything else that it was overlooked.

It’s an amusing if quite harmless mistake to make and we’re as culpable as anyone else so we’re not going to put the boot in, but we imagine that the sub-editor in question will be just a little bit more careful in future, even if that match reports in general would be far more entertaining if these kinds of lines were left in more often.
