Frank Lampard today became Chelsea’s record goalscorer after scoring his 202nd and 203rd goals for the club in their victory over Aston Villa, so he was entitled to play to the gallery a little bit afterwards.
The England midfielder has had to put up with ironic jokes about being fat over the years but nobody can argue with the astonishing rate with which he has banged in the goals for the Blues since joining from West Ham in 2001.
He got another two in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa today to bring his Chelsea tally to 203 in total, one better than the previous total held by Bobby Tambling, and Lampard’s team-mate Petr Cech ensured that he should lap up the appreciation from the visiting supporters by hoisting up on his quite lofty shoulders afterwards.
Lampard was quite emotional about his achievements when quizzed about them in a post-match interview afterwards but it is fitting that a man with such a knack of hitting the net from midfield should hold such a record and it would be a surprise if Chelsea don’t try their hardest to hold onto him in the summer such is his consistency and his form in recent weeks.
