Nike have released a special edition of the Mercurial Vapor R9 boots made famous by the original Ronaldo on the fifteenth anniversary of their release and we think they’re bloody fantastic.
Anyone who paid even the slightest heed to football and football boot trends in the late 90s will remember the Mercurial Vapor R9s which fat/real/original Ronaldo (call him what you want) wore to devastating effect in the 1998 World Cup in France until the massive controversy surrounding his involvement in the defeat to the hosts in the final.
To mark the 15th anniversary of their release, Nike have produced 1,998 (see what they did there) special edition pairs of the iconic boots, which come in a combination of blue/silver and lime green which we think works a treat.
We’re also informed that they include the flexible and responsive Mercurial Vapor IX glass fibre sole plate for explosive traction and a fresh 2013 aesthetic, which, we assume, makes them as good from a technical point of view as any other Nike boot on the market today.
Because they’re so nice and because they’re not exactly easy to get a hold of, they’ll set you back a cool £300 (€370) on sporting goods website Pro-Direct if you’d like to purchase a pair yourself.
If you do, can we suggest that you only wear them in absolute pristine conditions because it would be shame to see these bad boys covered in shite and ruined after only a couple of outings.
See that Puma? That’s how you make a football boot.
