Ready To Burst On To The Scene: Ruth Bradley

Ready To Burst On To The Scene: Ruth Bradley

JOE

This week’s up and coming Irish star is the very talented Dublin actress, Ruth Bradley. She may not be a huge star just yet, but we here at JOE are pretty sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about her in the coming months.

By Eoghan Doherty

In the meantime, here’s a crash course in what she’s been up to so far.

The 26 year old is probably best known for playing the lead role in the excellent Irish horror comedy film Grabbers. As Garda Lisa Nolan, Bradley has to help defend a small Irish community from a horde of blood-sucking aliens, realising that the only way to survive is to get incredibly drunk. Now THAT’S an excellent premise.

Bradley deservedly won the IFTA for Best Actress in a feature film for her performance, and here she is with her Grabbers co-star Richard Coyle discussing filmy stuff like getting their “juices flowing” and the difficult alcohol drinking-related research she put into the role:

And check out the trailer for Grabbers itslef, highly recommended by all of us here at JOE:

As is par for the course for any young Irish person working in the television industry, Bradley started off with appearances in  The Clinic, the springboard for a number of Irish stars including Chris O’Dowd and one of her real-life best friends, Amy Huberman.

JOE also wants Amy Huberman to be one our real-life best friends too. And to get rid of the restraining order she has out on us.

Bradley and Mrs O’Driscoll also teamed up again recently to appear in the Comedy Central sitcom Threesome:

In the past few years, Bradley had a recurring role in the first two series of the brilliant RTE crime drama series, Love/Hate, playing Mary Treacy and also nabbed one of the lead roles in ITV’s 4-part drama Titanic. Spoiler alert: The boat sinks.

The young actress hasn’t just been making an impact in the Irish industry, however, and in 2009 showed off her diversity as she starred as a creepy, Australian teen in the film In Her Skin. The film also co-starred Lord of The Rings maiden Mirnda Otto, everyone’s favourite ex-Neighbours star Guy Pearce and the legendary Dr Alan Grant played by Sam Neill so that’s quite an impressive line-up to be part of.

We’re pretty sure there were no velociraptors in this flick though. Disapppointingly so.

Hollywood seems to be next on the agenda for Bradley as she’s starting to make a name for herself in the States too. As well as co-starring with the always excellent Ciaran Hinds in The Sea (based on John Banville’s novel of the same name), Bradley has also been recently announced as the lead actress in new US TV series, Big Thunder. This production, like the hugely successful film series Pirates of the Carribean, is actually based on the popular Disney rollercoaster ride, Thunder Mountain.

Well, if it can work for Johnny Depp then it work for Ruth Bradley.

Watch this space.
