The future of the Seanad could be in the hands of the Irish people the next time the polling stations open.
It is envisaged that a referendum on the abolition of the Seanad could be held on the same day as the general election, the Irish Times reports.
The matter will be discussed at the first meeting of the Cabinet this week and following comments from Minister for Defence Tony Killeen yesterday it seems there is a strong possibility of a referendum.
“There does seem to be a public appetite for reform,” said Mr Killeen,
“We need to facilitate it. I know that the good intentions of Opposition parties to change things often don’t materialise in government. That is because other priorities get in the way. Holding it on election day would be the only way to ensure it would happen without distractions.”
With all going to plan we could be set for some big decisions, possibly in March.
