Doncaster Rugby League captain Shaun Leaf has sensationally been captured on camera betting against his own team.
Leaf has since been suspended by his club after betting £200 at 10-11 odds that Doncaster would beaten by more than 38 points in the fourth-round Challenge Cup tie against Wakefield on Sunday.
Doncaster lost the tie 50-10 but despite his winnings, the player, who missed the game due to a thumb injury, may be the biggest loser of the entire scandal after the side's chief executive Carl Hall said Leaf has no future at the club if the allegations are proven to be true:
"There is no place in the game for this. If what I'm told turns out to be true not only will he not be our captain he won't be at our club."
UK tabloid The Sun conducted the undercover sting and caught the player making the bet on camera. Leaf then told the paper's reporters: "Really I shouldn't have done that — I've just bet against my own club."
Upon hearing of their report chief executive Hall told the paper: "My heart is pounding. I have been connected with the club for 25 years and I am appalled and disgusted at what you have told me. I will be launching an immediate investigation to see if other players are also involved."
"If what you say turns out to be true then I am truly sorry. And it won't be a question of Shaun losing the captaincy — he won't be at the club.
"I am also very surprised. We base our club meetings on trying to win every game and try to do things right as a club. But I can't control what players do in their own time."
The exclusive video of the incident in question can be on the The Sun's website here.
