Robin van Persie has revealed he turned down the chance to wear the coveted number nine jersey because he feels it is unfair on supporters.

This season his exploits in front of goal have been instrumental in helping United wrestle the Premier League trophy back from their city neighbours and the club offered the frontman the available number.
He revealed in the United match programme yesterday that he feels it wouldn’t be fair on the supporters who have already shelled out for his current number.
“I think I’ll keep it. I have the option to take number nine but I don’t think I will do that. I’ll stick with what is right and what feels good,” he told United Review.
“Also, I don’t want to be harsh on the fans who have got number 20 on their kit. I don’t want them to have to buy a new shirt.”
Wayne Rooney made a switch in numbers earlier in his career and it is more common, much to the frustration of supporters.
QPR loanee Fabio seems to have little say in the matter, considering it was his squad number before RVP’s arrival, but we doubt as many have his name and number on the back of their red jersey.
Arsenal fans would argue he had little problems being harsh on them last season, but with many footballers accused of being out of touch with the fans, at least it is a small gesture from the Dutchman.
