Argentine team Club Deportivo Papa Francisco was set up in honour of the Pope and promised to promote fair play and non-violence. Good start, so…

When Pope Francis was first appointed, the news that he was a big football fan and is a supporter of Argentinian club, San Lorenzo spread far and wide, but we’re not so sure that he’s ever heard of Club Deportivo Papa Francisco, a semi-professional club based in Buenos Aires and set up in his honour.

According to it’s founder Jorge Ramirez, “Our motto is no hooligans, no violence and no insults,” and although they did originally calling themselves Real Buenos Aires, they chose to name themselves after the new Pope instead.

They played their first match in the regional leagues against Trefules recently, and although the match finished 2-2, the headlines were made when both teams had two players sent off. In fairness to one of the Papa Francisco lads who was sent off, David Hengen, he received a second yellow for pulling off his jersey celebrating a goal to reveal a t-shirt with the words ‘God loves you’ emblazoned across it. Harsh. Nice kit mind you, an absolute must-have for the hippest of the football hipsters out there.
