The internet, and especially Twitter, lost its mind last night because of the strong rumour suggesting Alex Ferguson was to hang up his chewing gum. Here’s the best tweets we found.
As it stands this morning, we are still none the wiser than we were last night. At around 10pm the Telegraph published the rumour that Alex Ferguson was considering retiring as Manchester United manager. All media outlets followed.
As is the case these days, Twitter went crazy with a fairly even mix of celebration, denial, jokes and all points in between.
There were many, many references to Fergie Time, and the Telegraph’s sports section is headlined with the phrase, but this effort from Footy Humour sums up a lot of the jokes floating around.

The parody accounts were out in force too, including the fake Shinji Kagawa account...

As was the man who became famous as he was mistaken for RVP last week, Indian IT consultant Ravi Visvesvaraya Prasad…

One of the happier people on Twitter was famous Arsenal fan Piers Morgan…

But the best tweet we saw was this fantastic effort from Press Association writer Wayne Gardiner…

We will probably know later on today whether there is any substance to the rumour. The mood music suggests there is something to this and with the New York Stock Exchange opening at 2.30 our time, that may be the deadline for a statement.
