Most people were taken by surprise yesterday with the news that the United boss is to step down at the end of the season after a glittering and trophy-laden career.

Part of the success stemmed from Fergie’s steely determination and his temper is a thing of legend at this stage. Admittedly he has mellowed in recent years – not sure all fourth officials would agree – but the hairdryer effect is something that has always been associated with the Scot. And the newspaper is lamenting that those days will be no more.

There have been many tributes paid to Ferguson since the news broke and will continue well after his retirement, but this is one of the most novel tributes we have seen.
