The timing of Martin O’Neill’s sacking was unfortunate for the Sunday newspapers, giving them no time to cover what has turned out to be the main story of the weekend. We can expect Sunderland to be linked with a whole host of players when the new man takes over, but here is some other transfer gossip doing the rounds.

It looks like David Beckham may well extend his time in Par-ee if reports this weekend are to be believed. Many are suggesting he will be offered a one-year deal, presumably a) for commercial reasons and b) for more commercial reasons. His involvement on the pitch has been limited since his arrival, and we would doubt he would donate his entire salary to charity should a deal come to pass. Though you just can’t rule anything out with Golden Balls.

Speaking of French football, one deal that is done and dusted for next season is the return of Jean Makoun to Ligue 1. The midfielder has taken to the Premier League like a bowling ball to water and Aston Villa have been looking to off-load the player for some time. Signed by Gerard Houllier from Lyon in January 2011 for £6 million, he spent last season on loan at Olympiakos before a season long loan to Rennes, who have decided to make the deal permanent. With just seven league games to his name, it’s fair to say it didn’t quite work out at the Midlands.

From the Nou Camp to Old Trafford?

Man. Utd have been linked to a Barcelona player by a few different papers, and considering they all go with Thiago Alcantara, there might just be something in it. United have been keen on the Spain international for the past three years and had a £15m bid rejected 18 months ago, and may well step-up their efforts to sign him in the summer.

Arsene Wenger may be about to dip into the coffers at the summer and they are being linked with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The striker was thought to be close to signing for Newcastle in January – he is French born so that immediately put the Magpies on red-alert – but the Gunners are now thought to be willing to stump up £10 million to bring him to the Emirates.
