Joey Chestnut broke his own world record today on his way to claiming his seventh straight Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest. The facts and figures behind it are pretty grim.
As much a part of Independence Day in the US now as singing the national anthem and letting off fireworks, Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest is a pretty big deal on July 4.
We may find it bizarre, distasteful or even plain wrong but ESPN covers it like something approaching a real sport (see below) and the winner this year, Joey Chestnut, is a very well known celebrity now.
Today Chestnut broke his own world record as he chugged down an astonishing 69 hotdogs in 10 minutes, beating his old mark by one.
And thanks to ESPN reporter Darren Rovell, we have some very disturbing facts behind this feat of excessive eating.

Let’s just say we wouldn’t want to be sharing a house with Joey tonight.
