Always fancied having a go at stand-up comedy? Then The Gaiety School of Acting are here to help.

While the thought of standing in front of a room full of strangers with nothing but a microphone and trying to make them laugh is terrifying for most of us, it is a fear that stand-up comedians have to conquer too.

Few if any ever bounded on stage the very first time and killed it. In fact, almost without fail, they died on their arse first time out. But nowadays there are more friendly environments than open spots to hone your comedy skills.

The Gaiety School of Acting is just that place. Starting on July 1, they are running a five-week course (one class a week) in Temple Bar. The Stand-Up Comedy course promises to

  • Teach you how to be relaxed on stage and develop your own comic material.
  • You will discover how to foster audience rapport and to present yourself with effective movement.
  • It is an excellent way to conquer your fears and express your own unique sense of humor on stage and make people laugh.

At the end of the five weeks you and the other participants will put on a live show in a comedy club in Dublin, putting all you learnt into practice. The course is taught by Irish comedian Aidan Killian, who has spotted an increase in Irish men taking the course this year, and not ll of them are planning on being the next Peter Kay either.

“I’ve seen a surge in the number of men signing up to my comedy course in a bid to conjure up romance. Stand Up is a great way of learning how to be confident at speaking in public and the bonus is you can make people laugh in the process.” Aidan also insists that it isn’t just the men who need his comedic help. Women also sign up to the Stand Up Comedy course at the GSA hoping to find the right men to make them giggle!

So, even if you don’t fancy yourself as the next Chris Rock, you will definitely be a more confident person if you learn how to stand in the spotlight and step up to the mic.

And if that’s not your thing, they are also running a one-day Comedy Improv class, on Saturday August 31.
