New statistics released by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government have shown that 30 dogs are abandoned in Ireland each day.

There’s an old saying: “Dogs are man’s best friend”. While it’s true that you’ll never find a more loyal companion than a dog, it’s also true that some people don’t show their canine friends the same love and attention that they do.

Now, we’re not going to get all soppy on the subject, but it’s desperate days when you have to abandon a poor helpless dog on the side of the road – and shame on you if you’ve ever done so. That’s why we need to drive awareness for dog adoptions.

To drive awareness around animal welfare and to encourage more adoptions the lads at Pedigree have enlisted the support of TV Presenter Grainne Seoige and Former Boxing World Champion Bernard Dunne (pictured above), both of whom are proud dog owners.

The Pedigree Adoption Drive campaign, which launched today, will run until the end of May.

The latest statistics highlight that a big difference is being made thanks to the Pedigree Adoption Drive. In 2008, a startling 10,094 dogs died in Irish pounds while in 2012, only 4,500 dogs died in shelters nationwide.

While there has been a large reduction over the past six years there is still a long way to go and the Pedigree Adoption Drive continues to drive awareness and fundraise to reduce these harsh figures further.

So if this sounds like something you might be interested in, head over to the Pedigree Ireland Facebook page, and for every new fan, Pedigree will donate a bowl of dog food to a re-homing centre. So it’s worthwhile heading over, even for a gander.
