Tonight’s TV: Charlie Brooker, Europa League and The Life Aquatic

Why TV may be warping your love life, more Gareth Bale goals (we suspect) and going underwater with Bill Murray.

Why TV may be warping your love life, more Gareth Bale goals (we suspect) and going underwater with Bill Murray.

Main Pick: How TV Ruined Your Life, BBC2, 10pm

Everyone’s favourite misanthrope is back on our screens and even though this show is a repeat, it is well worth a watch. As you might imagine by the title, Brooker sets out to show how the massive influence of TV has shaped us in ways that are probably not great.

Tonight’s episode tackles ‘love’ with shows like Blind Date and rom-coms being blamed for creating an unrealistic expectation among us poor TV viewing saps. He also has a dig at the concept of ‘soulmates’. It might make you want to chuck out your flat-screen but it is, funnily enough, great telly.

Sporting Pick: Spurs v Basel, UTV, 19.45pm

Ah the good old Europa League. Saviour of many a Thursday night, the secondary competition has been getting lots of coverage this year due to preponderance of English clubs. And while Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea have been good, Spurs have been great. Gareth Bale has been on fire all year but in Europe he has really shone, rattling two past Lyon and one against Inter. We expect a couple more at the Lane tonight against the Swiss side.

Movie Pick: The Life Aquatic, BBC1, Midnight

We know this film isn’t universally loved but anything with Bill Murray in it is okay by us. The story is all over the place so we won’t even attempt to go into it but it features sharks, long-lost sons, pirates and a funky submarine.

As we say the plot is secondary to what is a typical Wes Anderson flick; quirky, great looking and a fantastic waste of time.
