Former British PM Tony Blair has cancelled a London signing session for his A Journey memoir that was scheduled to go ahead Wednesday, fearing a spate of planned protests.
Blair was pelted with eggs and even shoes by angry anti-war demonstraters in Easons O’Connell Street on Saturday for his first signing appearance for the book.
The UK Stop the War Coalition had threatened a mass demonstration for the Wednesday signing outside the Waterstone’s store in Piccadilly. The controversial British National Party had announced they were also considering to stage their own protest.
Speaking on the likelihood of further security fears, Mr Blair explained his cancellation by stating: 'I very much enjoyed meeting my readers in Dublin and was looking forward to doing the same in London.
'However, I have decided not to go ahead with the signing as I don't want the public to be inconvenienced by the inevitable hassle caused by protestors.
'I'm really sorry for those - as ever the majority - who would have come to have their books signed by me in person. I hope they understand.'
