Transfer talk: Chelsea really, really want Cavani and United and Arsenal want to talk about Cesc

Chelsea are moving closer and closer to the signing of Edinson Cavani, while Manchester United are apparently planning on signing an Arsenal legend for the second summer in succession.

The prospect of Chelsea making a marquee signing this summer was an inevitable one and they seem in a pretty big hurry to do so by going all out to land the signature of Napoli’s Uruguayan superstar Edinson Cavani.

Speculation linking Cavani with a move to West London is increasing by the day and both the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror have suggested that the Blues are ready to part with £50 million and possibly a few fringe players in order to get their man.

Some have suggested that Fernando Torres might go in the opposite direction to hook up with Rafa Benitez yet again but although the man himself says he’s happy where he is, he mightn’t have much choice in the matter if the deal depends on him leaving Stamford Bridge.

Cavani has been one of the main transfer stories of the summer so far, as has the seemingly unlikely possibility of Cesc Fabregas returning to England to play in the red of Manchester United rather than Arsenal.

The Sun say that David Moyes would be willing to pay as much as £40 million to try and prise the Spaniard away from Barcelona despite Fabregas’ desire to stay put and Arsenal’s apparent desire to re-sign a player who gave so much to the Gunners before returning to his hometown club.

In the same piece, it is suggested that Wenger’s potential recruitment of Wayne Rooney may tie his hands as far as finances are concerned, while also speculating that Moyes might try and poach Phil Jagielka from Everton while he’s at it.

Throw Marouane Fellaini’s supposed links with both Arsenal and United and United’s admiration for Leighton Baines into the mix and you’ve got yourself quite the United/Arsenal/Everton transfer merry-go-round going on there and frankly we’re getting dizzy just thinking about it.

Staying with United and Arsenal, Yohann Cabaye appears to have issued a traditional come and get me plea to the Red Devils after getting all mushy and speaking about his admiration for everything at Old Trafford according to The Guardian, while the Daily Mirror reckon that Arsene Wenger has met with Gonzalo Higuain’s representatives about a possible move to the Emirates.

Across town in North London, the Metro think Spurs might be about to move for out-of-favour Bayern Munich striker and George McFly lookalike Mario Gomez, while speaking of strikers, up on Merseyside, Everton and Liverpool are both casting their eye over a Wigan striker in an effort to make Kone 2013 a big story a year on from Kony 2012.

Finally, Manchester United have completed a deal for Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela, Aston Villa have all but wrapped up the signing of Bulgarian international Aleksandar Tonev for less than £3million, Irish international defender Alex Pearce is poised to leave Reading for either Liverpool or Newcastle and Crystal Palace have made a £4 million bid for Blackpool winger Tom Ince.
