Transfer Talk: Could be a double whammy for the Gunners while Newcastle look to increase French legion

It could be frustration ahead for Arsenal in their quest for a striker, the Magpies in French connection shocker and the United board get Rio’s seal of approval.

It could be frustration ahead for Arsenal in their quest for a striker, the Magpies in French connection shocker and the United board get Rio’s seal of approval.

Part of us would hope that Gonzalo Higuain would finally sign for a club, though it would seriously cut down on transfer speculation at Arsenal. The Real Madrid striker is looking to leave Spain and after Juventus pulled out of the running roughly an eternity ago, the stage seemed set for Arsenal to swoop.

That hasn’t materialised thus far, while a £30 million bid for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez was also rejected. After being in the hunt for two “top, top” strikers to quote Harry, it now looks like they could miss out on both.

The Sun reports that Madrid to offer £20million plus Gonzalo Higuain for Luis Suarez, though Arsenal supporters may be a little more encouraged by what other tabloids have to say. The Daily Mirror say that Suarez is ready to tell Liverpool he wants to move to the Emirates while The Daily Mail state that Arsene Wenger “is confident” of landing the Uruguayan striker. Time will tell.

Most of the papers go with the line that the chances of Cesc Fabregas moving to Old Trafford have increased in light of Tito Vilanova’s departure due to illness, except The Daily Mail that is. They say Cesc has told pals he will only return to the Premier League to rejoin Arsenal. Handy that the paper has close ties with his comrades.

One player who could be moving in the opposite direction from the Premier League to the Nou Camp is Liverpool’s Daniel Agger. The Daily Mirror suggest he could be the man to “beef” up their defence. Considering he is just over 12 and a half stone, we’re not sure how much beef he would bring to the party, but certainly would be a quality addition in what has been proven to be a vulnerable back line.

It will come as little surprise that Newcastle have two French men on their radar. Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre-Pierre Gignac are being linked to the club. Graham Carr isn’t taking any summer holidays then.

On the Irish front, Stephen Ward is hoping to seal a move to Ipswich as his days at Wolves look to be numbered. He is one of a few players not given squad numbers after handing in a transfer request.

Steven Reid admits in The Sun it is costing him money to play for West Brom next season after snubbing bigger deals in the Championship. Great to see players putting regular football over money.

Finally, it isn’t really transfer speculation as such, but it did catch our eyes in the papers this morning. The Man Utd board can breath a huge sigh of relief after Rio Ferdinand has given his blessing to the appointment of David Moyes as successor to Fergie.

He is quoted across a number of papers saying if he were in charge of the decision, he too would have chosen the Scot. Thanks for that Rio.
