The rumour mill is in overdrive as we head into the second half of January, so we’ll try to sort out who’s heading where for what, and when

Cheslea boss José Mourinho shared a special moment with a journalist at his press conference last night, but that wasn’t the only thing he was up to, as he admitted defeat on his ongoing pursuit to sign Wayne Rooney. The Stamford Bridge gaffer suggested that United would still part with their prize asset this summer, but that he would be headed off to a fancy foreign club rather than a domestic rival. He apparently also issued a written apology to Moyes for his comments that he had “inside information” that a few people at Old Trafford were not happy with the Scot’s start to the league campaign, but it all sounds like mind games to us.

Most assists - Wayne Rooney: 6

Liverpool are looking at plenty of players to bring in and reinforce their squad this month, as they are apparently scouting Sheffield United’s Diego De Girolamo. The 18-year-old forward was born in Chesterfield, but Liverpool will face plenty of competition with Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United all interested too, according to The Daily Mail. Another name on their list is Lazio’s 26-year-old midfielder Antonio Candreva, who Rodgers would like to add to his squad, given that he felt he had to bring on young Brad Smith against Chelsea a few weeks back because he didn’t have the reinforcements. The Metro are reporting that they also wanted to seal the deal for Christian Tello this month, but the pacy Barcelona player wants to stay at the Camp Nou until the summer, and won’t be making the move in January.

Neil Lennon has been doing a great job at Celtic, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Premier League. With Chris Hughton’s position at Norwich looking increasingly like it’s becoming untenable, the Bhoys’ manager is the first name on the list to come in and fill his shoes according to The Daily Mail. If he does move, he would prefer to be in before the window closes we imagine, so this is one to watch closely over the next few days.

In other news, Manchester United’s hopes of signing Fábio Coentrão have been given a boost with the news that Madrid might be buying Alberto Moreno from Sevilla according to Talksport, which would mean they want to get the Portuguese’s wages off the books; Arsène Wenger has dropped a very strong hint that he’s going to sign a new deal at Arsenal this summer; Rene Meulensteen is hoping to get young Larnell Cole from his old club Manchester United; 6ft 8in Monaco striker Lacina Traore is close to signing for West Ham, but Everton are hoping to swoop in and hijack the deal; Barcelona’s 18-year-old forward Munir El Haddadi is on Arsenal’s radar this month; Southampton have rebuffed an offer from Inter Milan to take Dani Osvaldo on loan and finally, Atlético Madrid are not put off by Chelsea’s £20 million price tag for Thibaut Courtois, and will push on with their attempts to make his loan permanent.
