A 0-1 win at the Stadium of Light has prevented Chelsea from being declared league title winners and kept Manchester Utd’s slim hopes of retaining the status as champions alive into the last game of the season.

Nani once again proved key, finishing well in the first half to put the visitors 0-1 up. Rooney was back in action and was partnered up front by Berbatov – the latter contriving to miss numerous chances throughout before he was finally pulled off with 20 minutes to play.

Sunderland however, had little to offer in terms of attack and the 0-1 cussion proved enough to secure the win.

Despite the low score line, United were very much the dominant side throughout and should have added to their tally on a number of occassions.

The game was also notable for the return of Owen Hargreaves who made his long-awaited return to first-team action with less than a minute of extra time left to play.

The win means United’s chances of winning a fourth title in a row are still alive, although they now must rely on Wigan beat Chelsea in their own back yard. United meanwhile, will be going up against Stoke at Old Trafford in their final game of the season.
