Video: Absolutely awful double miss in the Europa League last night

It’s still technically pre-season so players might not be back to themselves just yet. Does that excuse this horrendous double miss? Not at all.

It’s still technically pre-season so players might not be back to themselves just yet. Does that excuse this horrendous double miss? Not at all.

We’re sure many of you found a way to tune into the, eh, keenly contested Europa League clash between Kazakhstan’s Irtysh Pavlodar and NK Široki Brijeg of Bosnia and Herzogovina last night, but those of you who weren’t watching missed out on a double-miss that will rival any wasted opportunity we’ll see once the season really kicks into gear.

Trailing 2-0 on the night – in a game which was refereed by Ireland’s Alan Kelly – and 4-3 on aggregate, Irtysh Pavlodar went in search of a late goal in the dying seconds only for two of their players to waste gilt-edged opportunities from inside the six yard box.

The first player missing the ball completely was bad enough, but the follow up effort when his mate whacked the ball up and into row Z when it was easier to score was far worse.

The goal wouldn’t have mattered in any case as Široki Brijeg still would have advanced on the away goals rule but much to the embarrassment of the culprits, that doesn’t mean that these misses will be forgotten about anytime soon; expect to see them on football blooper reels for years to come.
