We doubt Brendan Rodgers will be getting carried away with this victory over a Premier League rival, but it was a useful enough exercise in Yankee Stadium nonetheless.
The Reds emerged victorious on penalties when ‘keeper Simon Mignolet saved two of City’s efforts and Lucas Leiva struck the winning spot-kick after Rodgers’ men had twice come from behind to claim a draw in normal time.
Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling produced accomplished finishes to equalise two close-range Stevan Jovetic efforts for City on a night when almost 50,000 supporters – most of whom were cheering on the men in red – turned up at the most famous stadium in baseball for the International Champions Cup clash.
Somehow we doubt whether winning that trophy was high on the priority list of either Rodgers or City boss Manuel Pellegrini, but with Manchester United currently on top in Group A and Liverpool in Group B, there’s a good chance the two arch rivals will end up meeting in Miami on Monday evening.
