Video: Australian amateur player responsible for one of the worst ever open-goal misses

And he had done so well in the build-up too. What a shame.

And he had done so well in the build-up too. What a shame.

Most amateur footballers would be happy to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and eh, Ronny Rosenthal, but an amateur player in Australia has joined a list of names including those three for all the wrong reasons.

In case you hadn’t twigged, all three of those players were responsible for at least one truly awful open goal miss at one stage in their careers and this missed opportunity from an amateur match in Australia is truly awful indeed.

We’re not sure of the full name of the man responsible (judging by the persistent roaring of the number nine, we assume his first name is Manny) but it happened in a clash between Monash and the Falcons 2000 in the Gippsland Soccer League recently, when the number 13 from the latter side cut through the opposition defence like a knife through butter, rounded the keeper and proceeded to hit the post from a yard out.

Because it’s an amateur match, Manny probably thought that only those who were at the game at the time would have witnessed what was a miss for the ages, but because it’s already gone viral, it will be seen by an audience of many, many thousands rather than just a few.

Frankly, we’d be more worried at the potential reaction of the aforementioned number nine in the dressing room afterwards. In fact,we think we’ve encountered him somewhere before…
