Video: Barcelona bid farewell to Carles Puyol with this touching tribute

If you think he’s hairy now you should have seen him when he was 14. Seriously though, this is a lovely tribute to a club legend.

If you think he’s hairy now you should have seen him when he was 14. Seriously though, this is a lovely tribute to a club legend.

Puyol finally bid farewell to the club with whom he has played for his entire career earlier today, having been forced to hang up his boots because of a debilitating knee injury that has plagued him of late.

Though it is a sad way for it to have to end, Puyol didn’t have a bad career in fairness, winning six league titles, three Champions League titles and two Spanish Cups for Barcelona as well as a European Championship and a World Cup with the Spanish national side.

A leader from an early age, Puyol was appointed captain of the Catalan side in 2004 and the club paid him a fitting farewell today, dedicating a significant portion of their website to Puyol and carrying tributes from Barcelona players and management of the past and present.

They also posted the above video on the club’s official YouTube channel, mixing clips of some of his more memorable moments with personal tributes from the likes of Pep Guardiola, Louis van Gaal, Tata Martino, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas as well as a vintage clip of a 14-year old (and very hairy) Puyol earning some praise from senior figures within the club.

A true Barcelona legend, we wish him all the best in his retirement.
