Only a few people would have spotted it and it would have meant little to English football fans, but Joey O’Brien scored a lot of points with the GAA community against Man United last night.

There was so much going on in West Ham’s game with Man United last night – from Andy Carroll nearly decapitating David de Gea to Mohamed Diame’s sweet goal and Robin van Persie’s offside equaliser – but the most important incident from a GAA point of view would have been lost on the vast majority of people watching.

It would have been lost on us too had the eagle-eyed James Cullinane not sent us in a video (see above) of Joey O’Brien executing a textbook Gaelic Football pick-up midway through the first half.

No fancy dinking it up for Joey, who even fist-passed it back in the opposite direction when he decided he wasn’t going to take the free-kick.

O’Brien isn’t the only member of the Irish set-up capable of showcasing their GAA skills of course.

Shane Long has played in Croke Park for the Tipperary minor hurlers, Kevin Doyle and Seamus Coleman both have experience of playing Gaelic Football in the past and Robbie Keane and Glenn Whelan gave an exhibition of their kicking and fetching abilities in training at the Euros last summer.

They’re all playing the wrong sport, I tells ya.

Thanks to James Cullinane for sending this one into us
