It may be a stereotype attached to football in South America but football brawls on the continent tend to be quite common and can often get out of hand very quickly.
That was the case in the meeting between Arsenal Sarandi and Gimnasia La Plata last night, which descended into mayhem at the end over, reports suggest, the state of the match ball and time-wasting tactics by Gimnasia as Arsenal attempted to gain ground on Newell’s Old Boys in the title race.
Whatever the fight was over, it didn’t take long to get out of hand as virtually every player and a few subs got involved and it needed the riot police to sort things out after a couple of minutes of madness, following which the ref sent off two players from Arsenal and three from Gimnasia, while we imagine the clubs themselves will face sanction for a failure to control their players.
Can’t they all just get along?
