Forget David De Gea's howler in the Community Shield and take a look at Manuel Neuer's costly blunder on his Bayern Munich debut.
After his late reactions led to a second Manchester City goal in yesterday’s Community Shield tie, new Manchester United David De Gea has already caught flak for a slightly dodgy debut.
However, that’s nothing compared to Bayern Munich’s €21m signing Manuel Neuer, who gifted Borussia Mönchengladbach a surprise away win in the final game of yesterday’s debut matches in the new Bundesliga season.
Despite splashing out €40m to fix their leaky defence (Jerome Boateng and Rafinha joined from Manchester City and Genoa repectively), the German giants lost 1-0 after Neuer ran off his line to punch away the danger from a long ball.
The German No.1 missed, leaving Mönchengladbach’s Igor De Camago to bravely get his head on the ball for the win. The defeat was Bayern second-ever loss in the opening game of a Bundesliga season and Neuer was publicly criticised for his error by German legend Franz Beckenbauer following the game.
"Manuel mustn't come out there. It's 100% on him,” he said. “He should have stayed in the goal."
For what it’s worth, one of Bayern’s biggest rivals, Bayer Leverkusen, suffered an even bigger goalkeeper flop in another surprise defeat yesterday. The side lost 2-0 to FC Mainz after the embarrassing miskick below:
