West Ham big man Andy Carroll was in flying form last night. Pity David De Gea was in his way. He also had a friendly kick at Wayne Rooney.
The most common thing you hear about Andy Carroll is that ‘on his day, he’s unplayable’. Last night really wasn’t one of his days but he still managed to have an impact on the outcome against Manchester United, mainly as an excellent defender of set pieces.
He also had a couple of other impacts, one on Wayne Rooney, and another on David De Gea. This clip first shows the England striker putting the boot into another England man Wayne Rooney. This is swiftly followed by Carroll literally flying into De Gea.
As you might imagine, Fergie was fuming, wondering why Carroll didn’t see red but the Liverpool loanee didn’t see too much wrong with what he did.
“I just went for the ball and obviously went through De Gea, but I just went for the ball and that’s all it was,” Carroll told Sky Sports. “I was running straight in trying to get the ball and couldn’t stop at that moment, obviously the keeper has come and won it and I couldn’t stop when I was flying through the air.”
He went on to explain, in what won’t be news to anyone, that he likes the physical stuff.
“It was great, a tough battle, I enjoyed every minute and getting stuck in, getting a few elbows and giving a few. It’s all part of the game,” said Carroll.
