Leo Messi might not have the ridiculous goal tally for his country that he has for his club but he’s getting there after surpassing Diego Maradona’s tally of international goals in a friendly last night.

The great one struck a hat-trick in a 4-0 friendly victory over Guatemala last night and his first of the night was a cracker from long range as he took one touch when receiving the ball 30 yards out and blasted it into the corner.

He then drew level with Maradona’s 34 international goals with his second from the penalty spot and surpassed it before the final whistle when completing his hat-trick in a facile win in Guatemala City.

Messi now stands on 35 international goals, level with Hernan Crespo but 21 goals behind Gabriel ‘Batigol’ Batistuta, whose record of 56 goals he will probably catch before he hangs up his boots considering that Messi is only 25.

Whether he can catch Robbie Keane’s tally of 59 and counting, however, is another matter altogether.
