He’ll probably never score a better goal in his life but he might never score a more important one either. What a goal this is by Aston Villa’s Matthew Lowton.
Aston Villa travelled to Stoke today badly in need of a result to improve their prospects in the fight against relegation, but with five minutes left it appeared as if they would only take a point away from the Britannia as a 1-1 draw looked on the cards.
Then Matthew Lowton stepped up and scored the goal of his life to put Villa on the road to three points that might just save them from being relegated at the end of the season.
Controlling a high ball on his chest, Lowton produced a stunning volley not unlike Peter Crouch’s amazing effort against Manchester City on the same pitch last season and watched in delight as it sailed over Asmir Begovic and into the top corner to put Villa into the lead.
Christian Benteke scored late on to make sure of the victory but the plaudits will rightly go to Lowton for this effort; he’ll probably never score a better one in his life and to make it all the sweeter, Villa are out of the relegation zone after a crucial win.
Goal of the season? It’s certainly a contender…
