Sometimes, a pretty simple idea can be a great one, which is what the IllumiRoom seems to be to us here at JOE.

Using a projector, the IllumiRoom essentially turns the wall behind your TV into an extension of the screen, giving background, expanding the field of view, and overall immersing you that little bit more in the escapism of the whole thing.

Using the Kinect, a sensor will determine the layout of your room and how best to work around the furniture and whatnot, before setting up the projector to compensate for all that. Here’s a video from the lads explaining how it works. It’s a few minutes long, but the main points are covered in the first minute or so.

So far the folks at Microsoft are saying we won’t see anything about the IllumiRoom at the Xbox event this month, and they’ve stated that for now it’s just a research project.

They have mentioned however that it can extend beyond the gaming environment and into movies or TV, meaning this could be a pretty exciting project that would be separate from the Xbox.

If they do decide to package it or at least offer it with the new Xbox, it could be quite a difference maker in the console war between themselves and Sony.

That said, its success will surely depend on the price point that this enters the market at, but it does offer some pretty cool options that would make gaming a hell of a lot more fun.
