Hats off to the Portland Timbers, this is just great.
Atticus Lane-Dupre is an eight-year-old who was diagnosed with cancer last year. He contacted the Make-A-Wish folks and asked could his team, the Green Machine, play a game against local MLS team the Portland Timbers.
Not only did the Timbers say yes they laid on an incredible welcome for the youngster at JELD-WEN Field and even managed to get 3,000 fans to turn up to the game, providing a great atmosphere.
The kids on Atticus’s team all got special kits and lockers and met the Timbers squad before the game. Playing on a small pitch against five of the Timbers, including former Arsenal and Man U man Mikael Silvestre, Atticus’s Green Machine won 10-9, with Atticus scoring four and the winner.
He also earned himself the traditional slice of log that a goalscorer gets in Portland and got to swap shirts with the Timbers afterwards.
