Newcastle scoring sensation Papiss Cisse got a little more than a haircut and an awkward conversation when on a trip to the barbers in his adopted city recently.
While he couldn’t have been expecting much in the creative department from a hairdresser’s where a short, back and sides costs only £6, Cisse probably didn’t bank on being greeted by a mob of Magpies fans as he attempted to make his exit in his high powered Audi sportscar afterwards.
Whether he was showing that he’s just a man of people or he’s just a bit cheap, the Senegal international turned up at The Barber Shop in Felling, Gateshead for a trim and was happy to have the shop remain open rather than acting the diva and having the shop closed while he was inside.
Word quickly got around about what we can only assume was the barber’s most famous client and soon the shop was surrounded by crazy Newcastle fans, eager to get a piece – and perhaps a lock of hair – of a man who has made a startling impression since signing from Freiburg in January.
Cisse, however, wasn’t fazed by the adoring masses and happily mingled with and signed autographs for fans before eventually making his exit.
Cisse’s genial personality should come as no surprise, however. This, after all, is the same man who, only a few days previous, turned up at the house of a four-year old boy to thank him for a welcome card he had sent him on his arrival on Tyneside.
Commenting on Cisse’s trip to the barbers, Magpies boss Alan Pardew said: "That sounds like the North East. I have never had it myself - only one or two turn up when I get my hair cut. Papiss has grown into a bit of a cult figure here in terms of what he has done and the way he has conducted himself.
"He is a lovely guy. The North East is a friendly place and I think they have welcomed him with open arms."
Bless him.
