Sunderland took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half against Manchester United at the Stadium of Light, but there was an element of controversy about it.

Shortly after Nemanja Vidic had equalised a Ryan Giggs own goal on the stroke of half-time, the Black Cats were awarded a spot-kick when Adam Johnson tumbled under a challenge by Tom Cleverley very close to the edge of the penalty area.

Although Andre Marriner was content to play on, the linesman advised him to point to the spot, a decision that did not go down at all well with the United players.

Replays show that Cleverley didn’t make an awful lot of contact with Johnson, but at the same time, you’d have to ask why he was making that sort of challenge in such a dangerous area of the pitch.

So, what’s the verdict, was it the correct decision or were United hard done by?
