Video: Simon Cox scored the goal of his life last night

Capital One Cup football on a Tuesday night doesn’t sound like much to get excited about, but it turned out to be a great night for the Irish contingent across the water, particularly Simon Cox.

It’s been fairly obvious for some time now that Giovanni Trapattoni is fonder than most of the stocky striker and while some don’t quite see exactly why, Cox gave a glimpse last night of why he gets Trap so hot under the collar.

It was a night to forget for Forest overall as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Wigan at the City Ground, but few will forget Cox’s contribution to the game in the opening minutes of the second half. With Forest trailing 3-0 at the time, Cox controlled a long ball from the ‘keeper, nutmegged an incoming defender and crashed an unstoppable swerving shot to the top corner from 30 yards out. Check it out for yourself in the video above.

Patrons at the City Ground certainly got value for money last night as, ten minutes before the break, Wigan’s Maynor Figueroa continued his knack for notching spectacular goals with an absolute belter of a left foot effort that flew beyond Lee Camp and into the top corner.

Elsewhere, it was an unusually prolific night for the Irish players on display with James McClean and Shane Long both netting braces, Kevin Kilbane scoring for Coventry and James Collins scoring a hat-trick for Swindon in their famous victory over Stoke, for whom Jonathan Walters was on the scoresheet.

We doubt very much that Giovanni Trapattoni was in attendance at any of those games last night, however, so himself and his DVD player have a busy few days ahead.
