Stephen Ireland gave Stoke a brief lead against Chelsea today with a goal that will not be lost on Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane.

The former Manchester City midfielder put himself back in the limelight for all the right reasons when he put the Potters into an unlikely lead against Jose Mourinho’s men five minutes into the second half.

Jonathan Walters outmuscled Cesar Azpilicueta on the on the right and while the Blues were adamant it was a foul, the Irish international continued on and found the substitute Ireland whose superb shot bounced in off the base of the post.

The lead lasted only three minutes before Schurrle grabbed his second of the game to draw the sides level, but it was a pleasing goal from an Irish perspective every bit as much as from a Stoke point of view, though he did miss a gilt-edged opportunity to restore the lead soon after.
