The totally accidental collision between Kilkenny’s Walter Walsh and Galway’s Fergal Moore in Semple Stadium yesterday left both players needing medical assistance.

In the end, Kilkenny scampered away to a comfortable seven-point win over Galway yesterday to reach the Allianz League final but an early incident almost cast a shadow over a fine day out in Thurles.

With just 10 minutes on the clock a completely non-malicious collision between Kilkenny’s Walter Walsh and Galway’s Fergal Moore left both players in need of treatment.

Despite the helmets, Walsh ended up with a nasty cut on his head but Moore’s situation looked far worse as he was knocked out by the clash. As a precautionary measure the Galway man was put in a neck brace and left the field on a spinal board before going to hospital to be checked out. Scenes like that are chilling to watch but thankfully it seems Moore is going to be okay.

Galway selector Tom Helebert is quoted in today’s Irish Times as saying that the hospitalisation was “purely precautionary” and that “all the indications are he’s going to be okay. I would describe him as semi-conscious when we were talking to him on the sideline. He took a hard hit; it was nothing more than two guys going for the ball and he came out the wrong side.”

Great news for all concerned and we hope to see Moore back in action very soon.
