When a free-kick taker laughs at how bad his own free-kick is, you know it must be truly terrible. In that regard, this effort doesn’t disappoint.
Arnór Smárason of Danish side Esberg isn’t the first and won’t be the last player to sky a free-kick into row Z or thereabouts, but at least when other players have done it, it is because they tried to hit it really hard and just made a complete balls of it.
In stoppage time at the end of Esberg’s clash with Brondby last night, Smárason took the footballing equivalent of a sand-wedge chip shot from 30 yards, resulting in an effort so weak that it floated weakly into the upper tiers, where the fans weren’t slow to let Smárason know what they thought.
At least the Icelandic international didn’t let it get to him and was able to laugh at how bad it was and although it was utterly terrible, it still falls a long way short of the worst free-kick of this year and possibly of all-time from Austria, which has notched up almost three million views since it appeared on the internet last month.
One more look? Why not, it never gets old.
