Video: Tony Yeboah would be proud of this unbelievable goal scored in the FA Cup this week

We’ve never heard of Rene Steer before but my God, he certainly knows how to strike a ball. What a hit.

As much as we love football we’re not in the business of checking on the progress of the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup, but earlier this week, one of the oldest competitions in the game delivered one of the best goals you’ll see all year.

It was scored by one Rene Steer of St Neots Town against Canvey Island in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night and we’d say the crossbar is still shaking after Steer’s sublimely struck effort from 35 yards deflected off the underside of the bar before hitting the net.

As was hinted at by the brilliant @FootballCliches on Twitter, Steer must have sprinted about 40 yards before hitting the ball as it seemed to take an age for him to arrive on camera after the ball was cleared from the Canvey Island penalty area, but he could not have struck it any sweeter than he did.

Normally you wouldn’t expect a lower-league footballer to have his own YouTube highlights reel, but it would appear that Steer is quite the superstar and for more examples of what he’s capable of, check out the tribute compilation below.
