Vine: Xabi Alonso shows again why he is the coolest man in football when he comes face-to-face with Platini

Just when you thought you couldn’t love him any more…

Last night’s Super Cup in Cardiff featured one great cross, one delighted Ronaldo and one brilliantly defiant gesture by Xabi Alonso, everyone’s favourite former GAA-playing midfield maestro.

The story behind this goes back to the Champions League final, a game that Alonso was suspended for. In the celebrations for Gareth Bale’s goal in that game, Alonso ran down the side of the pitch to join in with his team-mates.

For that minor indiscretion, Uefa suspended the Real Madrid star for one game for a ‘breach of general rules of conduct’.

Madrid appealed but that was rejected last week, meaning Alonso had to sit out last night’s game in Cardiff.

So, when he went up to get his winner’s medal from Uefa head honcho Michel Platini, Alonso showed his dismay at being there in a suit rather than a playing kit.
