Water restrictions continue to disrupt the capital

Dublin City Council has warned residents that the night time water restrictions will continue tonight and may continue on until the weekend.

The recent restrictions have left people with low water pressures from 10pm at night until 8am or 10am in the morning, however, the water levels still haven’t reached the height needed before the council can turn the taps back on fully – so to speak.

“Nobody wants to be putting restrictions in place,” Dublin City Engineer Michael Philips said.

“But if we don’t impose these restrictions at the times that we are doing it, they will be shut down maybe for much longer periods a day in the future.”

According to the council, the water levels are currently at an “unsustainably low level”. This is mainly thanks to cracks in water pipes caused by the cold weather and harmless algae growing on top of many water reserves.

The water restrictions aren’t just affecting home owners. The Restaurants Association of Ireland has said that the nightly disruptions have caused Dublin businesses around €250,000 since they began last week.

In fairness, while it might be a minor pain in the arse, it’s probably better to ration a little bit now rather than rationing a lot later on…
