Wayne Rooney sustained a toe injury in the 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich last week, and is a doubt for next Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final, second leg in Germany.

The 28-year-old England striker will definitely miss Saturday’s clash with Newcastle.

“He’s got a badly bruised toe,” revealed United manager David Moyes.

“He’s got a terrible toe. Not only is it a problem for this game, it could be a problem for the Munich match.

“We need to monitor it. We’ll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up.”

Rooney’s absence would be a major blow for United, especially given the fact that Robin van Persie is also missing with a knee injury.

Javier Hernandez, Rooney’s obvious replacement, has been used sparingly this season and Danny Welbeck’s instincts in front of goal have been questioned, most notably after he failed to beat Manuel Neuer when clear on goal in Tuesday’s first leg.
