Wayne Rooney likely to miss the rest of Manchester United’s season with toe injury

Guess that gamble of playing him in Munich didn’t really pay off then.

Guess that gamble of playing him in Munich didn’t really pay off then.

The England striker looks set to miss United’s remaining Premier League games with the toe injury that cast doubt on his participation in the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, the last game Manchester United will play in the competition until the 2015/16 season at the earliest.

Despite receiving a pain-killing injection prior to kick-off, Rooney was clearly hampered by the injury in the Allianz Arena and performed far below his best, yet was allowed to remain on the pitch for 90 minutes by David Moyes as United attempted to salvage something against the reigning European Champions.

Reports in The Daily Star and The Daily Telegraph today suggest that Rooney, who has a chipped bone in his toe, may be allowed an extended period of rest in order to allow the bone to recover fully and might not feature again for the Red Devils this season.

Rooney’s participation in the World Cup in Brazil in the summer is not thought to be in doubt and England boss Roy Hodgson will no doubt welcome the extra recovery time ahead of the tournament, although there is also the prospect that he will go into England’s opening game against Italy undercooked without a competitive game in the next two months.
